"Ut pictura poiesis": text i imatge, mimesi i realitat quant a «Tirant lo Blanch»
2007
The relationship between literature and reality in the Middle Ages can be considered from several dimensions. One of the most important cultural elements of the medieval period is the visual representation of reality found it literary texts, not only through the presence of miniatures in the manuscripts, but especially through the description of realia in the same text. The encyclopedic tradition helps to intertwine this close relationship between the outer representativeness and the inwardness of the text, a new interpretation of the Horacian’s ut pictura poiesis. The «Tirant lo Blanch» is a fictional text full of iconic references to contemporary reality, which in this study are made clea…
2019
The date of Albert Jouvin de Rochefort’s journey, recounted in his Voyage d’Italie et de Malthe, in 1672, places him among the authors who were at the forefront of the Grand Tour phenomenon, which experienced its golden age between the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the following century. Palermo was the first stop on his journey to Sicily and Jouvin was fascinated by it. The closeness of the author to the baroque aesthetic is widely reflected in Palermo not only in the main monuments of the city, but in the entire urban layout, conceived as a Theatre of the World, in which coexist, in a multitude of monumental and decorative solutions, the fundamental social and cult…
The influence of Japanese kimono on European bustles and their representation in the paintings of the late nineteenth century
2020
This article investigates the relationship between Europe and Japan at the end of the nineteenth century through the influence of the clothing from both countries. Paintings and portraits from that era are analysed. A typical European clothing piece of that period, the bustle, is proof that little by little the traditional Japanese kimono began to enter the fashion of England and France. In addition, the article also investigates how the Japanese kimono became a luxury item in Europe; however, it was used as a gown-style clothing for the home, losing its original function. At the same time, some kimono and furisode were trimmed and re-sewn as decorative parts of European bustles. The dresse…

2014
Joannot Martorell recovers the Gran Palacio Imperial de Constantinople in the Greek chapter of Tirant lo Blanch, in order to provide a symbolic space to the heroic projection of his main character. Tirant achieves in the fiction an impossible dream even in reality. Uses the capital of Bosphorus as a symbol for a real New Rome and rescues an enclosure that in the Christian sphere becomes the heir of the ancient Empire. In this article we will analyze with detail the resources employed by Martorell to recreate the palace environment and value the contribution of the literary text as a source for History of Art.

2020
The attention that is dedicated to the Decorative Arts in the travelers' diaries is much inferior in comparison to that one turned to the archaeology, to the painting or to the sculpture. As far as jewelry is concerned, in particular, the growing admiration for the craftsman's mastery was flanked by the traditional consideration of its splendor as a status symbol and the ancestral conception of precious stones as bearers of particular magical or apotropaic powers. It is, however, natural that the quotations of jewels in the diaries of the Grand Tour are in small numbers compared, for example, to those relating to archaeological ruins, and their collection is the result of targeted research …
